The aging process is continuous and linear beginning in the early thirties and continuing throughout life.  Symptoms of aging include female menopause, male andropause, growth hormone somatopause, heralding a reduction is most of our hormones.  As these essential hormones diminish, two harmful hormones increase:  insulin and cortisol.  The Hormonal Optimization of hormones, together with proper Nutrition and Exercise, creates the triad of medical scientific principles of Age Management Medicine.

Age Management Medicine is a modern  paradigm and a new specialty which emphasizes preventive medicine in both men and women, using Education as the primary tool in Disease Prevention and Quality of Life enhancement.  Contrary to some who would sensationalize, aging is not a disease, but rather a process, that hopefully, we will all experience over an increasing, lengthening period of time.  This new specialty provides opportunities to not only maintain, but to regain youthful vigor and live healthier, higher quality lives.  Will we live longer?  Probably, but we have not proven that, yet.

Target disease conditions thought to represent old age include heart disease, diabetes type 2, insulin resistance, dementia, metabolic syndrome/syndrome X, osteoporosis and hip fractures, cancer of lung, breast, prostate, colorectal, and obesity. These disease conditions offer the greatest challenge to all physicians, including specialists practicing Age Management Medicine.

When patients are well informed of a healthcare risk and what that risk means to their future in terms to which they can relate, it places the opportunity (and burden) to heal on the patient and commonly causes positive changes in behavior and improvement in risk outcome.  Tools used in age management include Nutrition, Exercise, Supplements, Hormone Optimization, and Medications.  These tools provide the skills for patients to achieve their goals and improve their healthspan.

By surveying in depth the clinical and life style history, with clinical examination, laboratory and diagnostic testing, the patient’s disease risk can be assessed and the appropriate treatment initiated.  Follow-up is essential to monitor progress and changes, assess safety, and make treatment adjustments.  Follow-up may require  repeated laboratory and diagnostic testing as to achieve optimal treatment results.

Since we are not working with  disease but rather maintaining and optimizing our health, insurance companies may or may not cover these services.

The quality of our lives can be preserved and probably increased!
